Our mission is to instill an understanding and appreciation of the common thread that connects modern biological study at all levels, from molecules to ecosystems. This broad base of knowledge gives you the ability to succeed in any arena calling for biological expertise: teaching at all levels; academic, government, private, and industrial research; science journalism and law; professional fields such as medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and optometry; allied health areas such as physical and occupational therapy; and graduate study. For the very first humans, knowledge about plant and animal meant the difference between life or death.
Traditionally, they are grouped by the type of organism being studied: botany, the study of plants; zoology, the study of animals; and microbiology, the study of microorganisms. Biology is the branch of science that primarily deals with the structure , function , growth , evolution , and distribution of organisms As a science, it is a methodological study of life and living things It determines verifiable facts or formulates theories based on experimental findings on living things by applying the scientific method An expert in this field is called a biologist.
Ecological systems are studied at several different levels, from the scale of the ecology of individual organisms, to those of populations , to the ecosystems and finally the biosphere The term population biology is often used interchangeably with population ecology , although population biology is more frequently used in the case of diseases , viruses , and microbes , while the term population ecology is more commonly applied to the study of plants and animals.
Biology graduates can also transfer into medical careers, though this will usually require at least four years of postgraduate study. This means most biology courses will have core modules in the first year focusing on subjects such as cell theory and molecular biology, evolution, physiology and adaptation, gene theory, and homeostasis. By choosing one of our areas of specialization, such as Animal Physiology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, or Plant Biology, you can better prepare yourself for these exciting career opportunities.
You can specialise in the strands of biology that interest you most, such as microbiology and biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, or ecology and evolution. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops, supervised time in a studio or workshop and take part in guided independent study. The Bell Lab is currently extending laboratory investigations of experimental evolution to field scales at the Gault Nature Reserve.
We recommend you spend at least 35 hours a week studying for your Biology degree. In general, graduates of biology degrees will find that their background and skills will provide them with a broad spectrum of opportunities in both scientific and non-scientific fields. From anatomy to ecology and microbiology to zoology, the course options available for those interested in pursuing studies in biology are extremely wide-ranging.
